Book reviews are something I want to work on doing more of in 2024 - sharing the important books that change the way we see the world, so here we go!

Learning changes our brains, reading books evokes that imagination and can propel us to grapple with dreams for a greater future. This book, The Powers That Be: Theology for a New Millennium by Walter Wink (1998) has been a game changer for my world view. For years I considered myself more of a pragmatist... something that may be hard to believe now. Thanks to Walter Wink I have experienced a seismic shift in how I saw conflict resolution and the way to address the problems of the world. I highly recommend it. The Powers that Be is a thought-provoking and insightful exploration of spiritual direction in the face of systemic powers and structures. Wink, a renowned theologian, delves into the spiritual dimensions of confronting and transforming societal injustices.

The book begins by examining the concept of "the Powers" as outlined in the Hebrew Bible. Wink challenges us as readers to reconsider these powers not merely as political entities but as spiritual forces that can either uphold or subvert Divine Love's intended order. Drawing on biblical narratives, he encourages a deeper understanding of how spiritual guidance and direction can play a pivotal role in engaging with these powers.

One of the strengths of Wink's work is his ability to bridge theological concepts with practical applications. He provides readers with a framework for spiritual resistance, emphasizing the importance of nonviolent confrontation and the embodiment of alternative values. Wink's insights offer a guide for individuals seeking to navigate the complexities of the world while remaining rooted in their spiritual beliefs.

Throughout the book Wink explores the role of prayer, discernment, and community in spiritual direction. He highlights the significance of cultivating a discerning spirit to recognize the powers at play and discern the appropriate response. Wink's emphasis on communal engagement underscores the interconnectedness of spirituality and social justice, urging readers to consider their role within a broader community striving for positive change.

While The Powers That Be may challenge some traditional perspectives, its depth and sincerity make it a valuable resource for those seeking spiritual direction in the midst of societal challenges. It also may be a challenge for some agnostics as Wink delves heavily into biblical texts supporting his theories. Walter Wink's work encourages readers to reflect on their spiritual journey, engage with the powers that influence our world, and strive for a more just and compassionate society. Overall, this book is a compelling guide for individuals on a spiritual path seeking relevance in today's complex social landscape. If you find yourself wanting to be stretched - check it out. I can't wait to hear what you think.
